Myths, and the Reality, of Female Genital Surgery
Female genital surgery may bring to mind any number of images. For some, these are good and for others, not so good. In reality, however, modern female genital surgery is completely safe and can restore a woman’s confidence level, with little chance for complications. For these reasons, it is vital that we can separate female genital surgery fact from fiction. Women deserve a chance to make an informed decision about whether a labiaplasty, vaginoplasty, or other rejuvenating genital procedure, is right for them.
Myth: Procedures such as a labiaplasty or vaginoplasty are performed to please men.
Reality: Women seek female genital surgery for many reasons, but rarely to please a partner. Excessive tissue of the labia or loose vaginal muscles can cause moderate to severe discomfort; a surgical procedure can sculpt tissues to increase comfort under clothing and during intercourse. An added benefit is seen in a woman’s improved self-esteem and confidence.
Myth: Vaginal rejuvenation is painful.
Reality: Female genital surgery involves meticulous techniques, performed in a safe surgical environment. Depending on the procedure, either a local anesthetic or general anesthesia will be used, meaning there is no pain during the procedure.
Myth: Recovering from a labiaplasty or vaginoplasty is difficult and long.
Reality: The recovery from female genital surgery is generally short, and often pain-free. Most women are back at work within a couple of days, sometimes the following day. Sexual activity will need to be postponed for six weeks.
Myth: Female genital surgery and genital mutilation are the same thing.
Reality: Genital mutilation refers to a cultural act of removing the external female genitalia. This is nothing like female genital surgery, which involves sculpting and shaping the labia, or tightening the vagina, for improved aesthetics and to alleviate discomfort.
Myth: Choices in female genital surgery are limited.
Female genital surgery includes a variety of techniques, including labiaplasty, vaginoplasty, vaginal rejuvenation, a clitoral hood removal, and G-spot injections. Each procedure is customized to the individual woman, carefully addressing her personal issues.
