I had a labiaplasty. When I tell people this, their first response is usually, “What is that?” And then comes the… “Who would get such a thing?” The answer is me; a normal woman born with big labia. I am not crazy, not obsessed with my appearance, and I’m certainly not addicted to plastic surgery. To better understand, you need to walk in my shoes for a minute.
Ever since I was a young teen, my labia have been large – make that huge. As long as I can remember, my ‘privates’ were not like those on the other girls. My lips were hard to miss through my underwear or swimsuit bottoms. I quickly learned to stay covered in front of my friends. Making matters even worse was the discomfort. My labia constantly rubbed and chaffed under my clothes, especially when I wore jeans or went to gym class. While my body made me extremely self-conscious, my mom told me this would pass and I would outgrow my insecurities. This never happened
When I graduated from college, after years of torture, I made the choice to do something about my situation. I met with an experienced cosmetic surgeon who explained the Labiaplasty process. Little did I know, this simple procedure would have the power to change my life.
I was nervous during the weeks leading up to my procedure, but also excited. When the day finally came, the whole process was easier than I had anticipated. Everything went by fast, and before I knew it, I was waking up from anesthesia. There was no pain and no complications, so I was sent home to heal. The first several days I slept a lot. I had some bruising and a little bleeding, plus some mild discomfort, but nothing that could not be controlled. Fast-forward eight weeks – I was completely healed and for the first time, looked oh so feminine down there!
Today, my jeans are comfortable. I never worry about my lady bits showing through my clothing. And then, of course, there is the sex. Words cannot describe how much more secure I feel when sharing my body with someone I love.
The Labiaplasty is an often misunderstood procedure. However, the surgery gave me an opportunity to like my body for the first time. I am a happier and more confident woman because of it. My hope is that someone will see herself in my story, and gather the courage to take that first step.
